Floorball Update

Apologies for the late report.

I have been wrestling with the problem of how to decide the finalists for the 'A' Team and Girls' team competitions as fairly as possible. We have had to resort to shorter matches on too may occasions this season which becomes a problem when there are also a lot of close results. This means that if, after a full league programme, several teams are still within a couple of points of each other we need to find a 'better' way of separating them than 'goal difference'. or the result of a single early season match.

The 'B' Team play offs start tomorrow and are impossible to predict.

The other current situations are below.

GIRLS TEAM:

Bourton on the Water are well clear in the table and will definitely be in the final. Dormer House and St James & Ebrington are definitely in a semi final. Temple Guiting may join them if they can defeat the Federation. This semi final stage may have to be played on a Monday or on another day at Fire College if Dormer House have a slot available.

'A' TEAM:

We are going to have to complete the full league table. The withdrawal of Shipston means that this is now feasible. There are eleven matches to play. Nine of these have an impact on which teams go to the final. The other two games sort out mid table rankings. Bourton on the Water and Ilmington are locked at the top of the table, with St Davids, St James & Ebrington and St Catharines close behind, all with games in hand. Even after these games I am not convinced that finalists will emerge easily and some semi finals will be needed. I don't think the league has ever been this close.

Regards,

Andrew

Tutors - Please let the team see this if you have time.

I have had a bit of information from one of the schools about the effects of ... yes ... GDPR. I understand that surnames of the players must not be used. It may be that your school's policy is different. Please let me know if it is. However, for now, the usual report is no more. I will write what I can, but it may be just tables and scores, with only a bit of information. I will use initials, which you will have to decipher.

The Cotswold Floorball League's A Team and Girls' Team competitions were both expected to deliver their two finalists tonight only for results to leave almost everything still in doubt.
Girls' Competition.
Temple Guiting's hopes of defending their title were severely dented after three losses. Bourton on the Water showed that they really are the team to beat as they amassed 25 points out of 27, beating the holders 7-1 in the process. LJ's early hat trick in the space of a minute laid the foundation. IT followed up with two more goals then LJ brought her tally up to five. MM in the Temple Guiting goal made a lot of good saves in a vain effort to keep the score down. St James & Ebrington also defeated the holders, 4-1, in what was initially a much closer match. IWC and TM gave the Campden side a two goal lead, LM pulling one back for Guiting. IWC and TM finished the game off with a goal apiece. This drew St James & Ebrington level with Dormer House on fifteen points. They must now play a semi final match to decide who plays Bourton on the Water in the final. Temple Guiting may yet join them if they can beat North Cotswold SF next week.
St Davids also defeated the holders when EB's lone goal gave them the win. EGO scored early on to give St Davids the lead against Blockley, but had to settle for a draw when EDB netted late on. St Davids now end in seventh place and Blockley in eighth place. Bourton on the Water completed their qualifying campaign with a 2-1 win over Blockley. After LJ gave them a 2-0 lead they removed her from the line up for a well deserved rest. This allowed Blockley's EDB to pull one back, but too late to affect the result.

A Team Matches
After their dominance in the girls' matches and their qualifying group it was expected that Bourton on the Water would also reach the A Team final. Everything looked good when LJ slammed home an early goal, followed by a torrent of shots against other group winners St James & Ebrington. Only great work by the defence and JL in goal prevented a heavier defeat. St James & Ebrington took a major step towards the final when they beat Dormer House 2-0, both scored by OB. JL again performed well in keeping out a Dormer attack which deserved more for their effort. In what was to prove a very tough evening's play for Bourton they then succumbed to defeats by both St Catharines and St Davids. Both teams really impressed, but were suffering from too many early draws and losses to be sure of direct qualification to the final. St Catharines took an early 3-0 lead when MB (twice) and ES scored. LJ did pull one back for Bourton, but too late to force a win. In the St Davids match LM gave them an early lead, soon equalised by Bourton's LJ. The match hinged on a well taken long range free hit by ET which landed in front of goal and was tipped home by LM. He soon completed his hat trick before LH completed the 4-1 victory. Bourton on the water now knew exactly what they had to do to stand a chance of reaching a semi final. In their way were the holders, Ilmington. The holder's defence were blocking almost everything brilliantly, but could not prevent LJ from gaining another hat trick and a 3-0 win for her side. This gives her 47 goals at an average of 2.5 per game. The next best record is St Davids LM with 14 goals.
Bourton on the Water are on top at present, but have only one match to play. Their programme complete, Ilmington are stuck in second place and must hope that results below them open a back door to the semi final stage. St Catharines and St Davids both have matches to play, can still get direct to the final, but may well have to meet in a semi final to see who progresses. St James & Ebrington look like favourites to reach the final if they can win three of their four remaining games.

Next week there will be nine matches in the B Team Competition, looking for a single team to advance, as well as the final Girls' League qualifier.
